Hide and Seek Holiday Edition!

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The scissors were hung by the sewing machine with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there. The Scenesters were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of cupcakes danced in their heads.

When out on the tin roof there arose such a clatter, DIYScene sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window DIYScene flew like flashlightning, tore open the curtains and threw up the sash. When what to DIYScene 's wondering eyes should appear, but a miniature man, and eight tiny reindeer, he whistled and shouted and called them by name. Now Angry ! Now Poisoned! Now Spoons and RedThread! On Fierce, on Smarmy, on Zombie and AnnaLady!

He spoke not a word but went straight to his work,
And filled all the gift baskets, and turned with a jerk. He sprang to his sleigh And away they all flew. But the Scenesters heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight, Merry Christmas to DIYScene and to DIYScene Good Night!

Mythbuster: Handmade is NOT Synonymous with Grandma!!

Admit it, so many of you out there automatically think “crocheted toaster cozy” or “knitted doily” when you hear the term handmade. I have to say, growing up, whenever my mom would utter “we can make that” I would cringe and imagine the horribly ridiculous concoction that would arise out of that statement (sorry mom!). I held on to the idea for a long time that handmade must equal something you would find in the corner of your grandmother’s home hidden underneath the mounds of 30 year old clothing patterns and scraps of yellowing fabric. This myth was bashed into a zillion pieces for me a few years ago when I discovered Etsy, and more importantly my favorite forum on Earth, DiYscene.
Upon delving into the depths of the thousands of shops on Etsy I began to uncover some amazing artists (yes, handmade CAN be art) spanning from clothing to food and everything you can imagine in between. The talent and variety (please don’t let the frequently boring front page of Etsy fool you) found there is astounding. Literally hours after opening my shop I received a note to check out one of Etsy’s street teams focused around the DiYscene forum. I was instantly in love. The forum abounds with interesting alternative crafters, seamstresses and artists. I had found my home! The women and men involved showed me the light and I began to see DiY as a lifestyle. It has become so important to me in a time of big business, sweatshops, and impersonal customer service to try to buy handmade whenever possible. You may pay a little more for it but the quality is above and beyond the pieces of mass produced crap you buy in mall stores and most sellers I have dealt with have been so friendly and appreciative. But beyond all of that you really can find amazing things on Etsy to suit ALL lifestyles – not just the elderly blue haired bingo playing ladies crowd.
To prove my point, I want to highlight some exquisitely made alternative pieces I have found on Etsy that would scare your grandma right outta her rocker!
First off, my friend Cindy over at aNGrYGiRL Gear makes the most AMAZING corsets, hoodies and shrugs. Full of black, metal and kickassery her pieces are beyond perfection. I happen to know this for a fact as I own close to 10 of her creations. Each of her designs offers its own unique style ranging from the playful naughtiness of the Innocence Corset to the freakalicious beauty of the Severity Corset. Throw into the mix her whimsical animal shrugs like the Panda, Kitty and Vermin and you have a well rounded line that appeals to all types of alternative fashion seekers.

Next I want to highlight a bag maker who’s handbags, clutches and messenger bags are so well made they could take a brutal beating and still keep on going. Miss Jamie is the beauty and brains behind Warning Label Creations and her alternative designs range from Gothic to Japanese street fashion. Again, I happen to own a couple of Jamie’s bags and I absolutely adore them. You can truly find a bag for any occasion at Warning Label Creations from the elegant Deathgrip Clutches for your evening on the town to the large Black Market bags that are perfect for the farmer’s market on a lazy Sunday morning (when you still want to look bad ass, of course). Jamie also makes scarves and clothing which are equally fabulous.

Now that we have you set up with a kickass wardrobe and a rockin bag to hold all your crap, let’s move on to home goods! *cough* FabulouslyFierce *cough* Anyhoo, Erica of WorthySoyCandles makes THE most olfactory pleasing candles with a huge variety of scents. Right now, her pumpkin soufflé is my favorite; it makes my entire kitchen smell like fresh baked pumpkin pie. I swear my husband even tried to eat it when I pulled it out of the box. In Erica’s shop you can make all kinds candles from tea lights to 8oz jar candles in any scent you want. Erica also makes some wonderful (not safe for granny) crocheted items, like the Peter Cottontail Hang Man purse.

In the market for a new couch?? Then check out VonErickson’s coffin couch; made to order with your choice of purple, red or black fabric. Probably the most wickedly delicious piece of furniture I have ever seen, when my ship comes in I will have one in every room!

I’m sure by now you get my point. Handmade is not just for octogenarians anymore, there is an entire culture of alternative handmade products out there that are young, hip and straight up badass. So don’t cringe when you hear “handmade”, take a second to check it out, I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised.

Featured Artist: Dingogirl's Den

Jolene is the creative force behind the Etsy shop Dingogirl's Den. She makes a variety of items ranging from stuffed animals to decorative pillows, each possessing an air of whimsy and wonder with a touch of bizarre. Jolene's pillows and tote bags feature handmade appliques that will just blow you away, I am in awe of each new item she creates.

I was so happy when Jolene agreed to be featured on my blog and I was able to pick her brain a little.

FF: How did you get started crafting?

Jolene: Since I can remember I have always been crafty or at least curious. I painted, sculpted, but it wasn't until I started working with Soft sculpture, that's what got me into sewing. I have never looked back, I just want to keep challenging myself.

FF: What drove you to make pillows?

Jolene: Because I am the ultimate hedonist I enjoy comfort and like to make things that are fun and comfortable...pillows just kind of fell into place. They allow me to create scenes and to get more detail in the piece.

FF: Your designs are so original and fun, what inspires you?

Jolene: I am a huge animal and nature lover. I always feel so much more connected to what I am working on if it is related to those 2 things.

FF: What is your favorite item that you’ve made?

Jolene: hmmmmm... I think it's a tie between My Gnome Pillow or my Squid Pillow... I think I will have to say my squid though.

FF: Any plans for venturing into more home décor items?

Jolene: I am hoping to be working with a woman who is part of the http://www.des-syn.com/ design firm. I would be using my skills to make and create different accessories for high end Interior design.

FF: What is something about yourself that would surprise people?

Jolene: I am told by people all of the time that I have great energy LOL

FF: One last question...stolen from James Lipton who stole it from someone else - what is your favorite curse word?

Jolene: Mother f*cker

Thanks Jolene!

Fierce Decorating Lesson #2: Don't Be Afraid of Color

Color is your friend, it's not something to be feared when it comes to decorating. I've been in quite a few homes where the walls are stark white, the carpet is tan and all the furniture is in neutral colors. If this is your style and what you enjoy that is completely fine, but a lot of times people are "scared" of bringing color into their homes. Not in the om-my-god-I-think-the-red-walls-are-gonna-come-to-life-and-eat-me kind of way, but more in the not knowing how much color to add and not wanting to go overboard (which believe me, I have done before - just ask my husband about the Barney-purple wall in our first apartment) kind of way. It's understandable, but color doesn't have to be scary. I happen to like a lot of color, but it isn't for everyone. Start off small and see how a little bit of color suits you and grow from there. One of my favorite design concepts is the accent wall. Instead of painting an entire room brandywine red, pick one wall and paint that. It sounds odd, but that one wall adds so much warmth to the room and gives it an eclectic feel. You also don't need to get all new furniture - another one of my favorite decorating tricks are slip covers. There are so many options for slip covers nowadays that you can get them to match any decor, and the best part is when you're sick of them, pull them off and grab a different one! If you're really crafty you can make your own slip covers, but if not www.SureFit.net is a great source! You can also dress up a boring couch or chair with throw blankets and pillows, another easy way to add splashes of color without having to fully commit. There are so many little ways to warm up your decor and keep the nightmares away ;)

In honor of this lesson I want to feature an awesome friend of mine who is definitely NOT afraid of color - Destry, the beauty and brains behind PZCreations. Her and her husband recently bought a new home and the transformation they have done on it is AMAZING! Their bold choices have breathed new life into the home and it is definitely a design inspiration! Destry explains the transformation process below:

I have always loved bright bold colors. I knew when I was a little kid that when I bought a house it would be my techno colored crayon box. Well my husband and I were lucky enough to buy our first home in February of this year. We have been working non-stop since.
Here is our before and after living room/kitchen. Our kitchen and living room are one long room so I knew the colors would have to flow together.

We started out by painting the walls above the wainscoting a flat turquoise. We really have no idea why we chose turquoise. We kept it this way for awhile with just the top parts of the walls painted. As time went by we started hating the off white color that was left on the cabinets and wainscoting...so we decided to paint it black!!! The bottom of the walls became a glossy black which took forever to paint. I painted it all by hand with a brush...no roller. It has fine lines in it and the roller just wasn't cutting it. I painted the base of the kitchen cabinets the same turquoise but instead of flat I used semi-gloss. This is because glossy paints are more durable and stand up to water and grease which is a must in a kitchen. The cabinet doors became the same glossy black as the wainscoting.
I spray painted the ugly rust colored cabinet hardware silver and we put up a new art deco silver light fixture.

This is my before and after bathroom. I call it my Art Deco Dollhouse bathroom.
As you can see, we had salmon colored tiles and tub to work with. YUCK!

We started by using a hammer, chisel and crowbar to remove the tile from the tub surround and vanity counter. Great way to relieve stress plus it's just fun. Make sure you wear protective eye wear and gloves. Bits of tile go everywhere! The only thing we didn't do ourselves was replace the tub. We had that done professionally and once I saw all the work the plumbers had to do there is no way we could have done it ourselves. Once the tub was in I tiled the tub surround. I chose the black and white contrasting tile because contrasting colors are an ongoing theme in art deco design. My husband and I had never tiled before so as I say we just kind of winged it. We had tile, tile adhesive, grout, trowel, grout float, tile cutter and chipper. Yep, you need a lot of stuff to do this job. I found this website helpful : http://www.floorfacts.com/installing-ceramic-wall-tile.asp
I trimmed the tub surround in decorative glossy black wood to finish it off.
We tiled the vanity the same way as the tub surround. My husband replaced the sink for me. The sink was only $40 at Lowe's it was an awesome deal! My awesome decorative mirror I bought at a flea market for $18. It was an ugly rusty gold color, I used metallic silver paint to bring it back to life. I love finding good deals that can be fixed up for almost nothing. After all the plumbing and tiling I got to the fun part which for me is painting. The cabinets became a dollhouse inspired light pink. I then glazed them to give them a soft finish. The walls are a dark, glossy gray. Always use a durable, glossy paint when painting a bathroom. The last few steps were easy. Making curtains and hanging artwork. I never thought I could be so in love with a bathroom but I am!!!

Thank you so much Destry for sharing your gorgeous new home with us! I hope you have inspired people to bust out the paint cans and have some fun :)
Be sure to check out Destry's Etsy store for amazing accessories

Featured Artist: Things That Bling!!

Miss Mandy is the beauty and brains behind the Etsy shop ThingsThatBling. This spunky chick makes a multitude of awesome stuff including screen printed bath and kitchen towels, quirky potholders, silly plush monsters and some of the most gorgeous beadwork jewelry I have seen. Beyond being a DIYer, she is also a molder of young musical minds and a musician in the band Honeycreeper. Mandy was one of the first people I met when I came on to the DIY scene and she has left a lasting impression. Not only do I admire her for her amazing handmade items but also I love her sense of humor and candid honesty.
I happen to be the proud owner of ThingsThatBling kitchen towels, potholders, and a silly monster so I know first hand that Mandy is full of talent and I wanted to share some of her kickassery with you! Mandy was nice enough to chat with me for a few minutes so I could pick her brain a bit:

FF: Ok, first question is an easy one: Why home decor?

MANDY: I have always used things that made me smile to decorate my apartment, room, house, wherever. I often used old toys and random weirdness, but then I realized I could start actually making home items. Things people use daily that can give them a chuckle...hence the potholders.

FF: Do you find humor inspires a lot of your creations?

MANDY: YES! Humor inspires almost everything I do, but I also have a very dark side. I guess the bottom line to me is that life can suck pretty hard, so i want to help people to smile in any way I can...unless their douchebags...hahaha!

FF: Well, douchebags need cool home decor too! You are also a musician, does that reflect in your designs at all?

MANDY: My band merch is actually how I started making stuff...stuff being the "technical" term. haha! I had screenprinted for years before I made an etsy shop, and my first monsters were ones I sold at shows. The skull towels are actually prints I made for the band...so i guess in that way it reflects being a musician. Just for the record...I have nothing against douchebags or any other feminine products

FF: Any plans for more home goods in the future?

MANDY: YES! Because I am so anal retentive though, I haven't made any new designs I am ready to sell yet. Things I have been working on are rugs, aprons, tablecloths and tissue holders. Things that don;t take massively long because I have a short attention span!

FF: I can't wait to see them and add to my Things That Bling collection! What advice would you give to other home decor DIYers who are just starting out?

MANDY: hhhmmm, I think I would go with think out of the box. Try to take everyday items and make them more interesting. There can be awesomeness in every corner of your home if you can imagine it there, ya know? And of course...keep trying! It takes time to find your clients! You can be the most talented person in the world, but the world is full of people, so its up to you to seek out those who are like minded!

FF: Excellent advice. Thanks so much for your candidness! One last question...stolen from James Lipton who stole it from someone else - what is your favorite curse word?

MANDY: hmmmmmmmmm...gotta be cocksucker. yup hahaha

FF: lmao, thanks for your time.

MANDY: thank YOU!

Here are just a few examples of the amazing creations you can find in Mandy’s shop.

Fierce Decorating, Lesson 1: Find A Focal Point

My first decorating tip is a fairly simple one: make a theme in the space you are working with by using something you find beautiful as your focal point and working outward from there. It could be anything from a throw blanket with a design you love to a painting by your favorite artist to something as simple as a small vase. For example, I am in love with this new lamp I made using one of my all-time favorite fabrics and it would serve as an amazing inspiration piece for my bedroom.

This doesn't mean that my entire room has to feature this fabric - I can use anything with complimenting colors or patterns to accent my favorite elements of the lamp. For instance, a bed set along these lines would make an alluring backdrop for my focal point while still adding depth to the overall decor.

It’s ok to throw in little accents with the same fabric as long as it's not overwhelming - possibly a couple throw pillows, or a valance over the window. Once you have the major elements of the room in place, you can start working on those little details that really make a room stand out. I'm a huge fan of candles and knick-knack shelves or finding things that are meaningful to you and displaying them in a unique way. Splashes of your personality sprinkled around can really add a lot of beauty and emotion to a room.

That's it for this lesson, check back soon for the next one!

Here are a few handmade home decor items I found on Etsy that I think are brilliant, and maybe they'll inspire you to go home and revamp your living space!

Why Alternative Home Decor?

I have always loved home décor. When I moved into my first apartment on my own, I was so excited to decorate and turn my space into a place where I felt comfortable and at home. I was only 20 at the time so funds were limited, but when you know where to look you can do really amazing things on a budget. Over the years as I’ve become more established, I do like to splurge here and there for really nice pieces for my home and now that I’m married it’s even more fun to merge the two styles into something that works for us as a couple.
Where am I going with all this you ask? Well, I think a lot of people don’t look at home décor the way I do, as an extension of your own personal style. It’s easy to buy clothes and jewelry to express yourself, but how many of you come home to a place that truly shows off who you are? I’ve realized that starting Fabulously Fierce was a way for me to try to pass on my love of alternative home décor and show the public that it IS easy to express your style in your home! It doesn't have to be a daunting task - it can be fun AND simple!
I have been pondering what direction to take this blog for some time now and I've decided that I want to start sharing decorating tips, advice, articles, etc. I want the public to see how much you can transform the look and feel of your home just by adding a few key pieces to it. So, stay tuned for what's to come - and tell your friends ;) Thanks for reading!

Back to the Working World

So finally, after sending out a ton of resumes I received one call back. I went into the interview and I guess kicked serious ass because I beat out 600 other applicants and got the job!
I'm torn by this. I'm happy to be working and making money, but saddened that I need to work a corporate office job to pay the bills. I really enjoyed having all the time in the world to spend creating cool stuff for Fabulously Fierce and I will miss that. But, the place seems to have a lot of great people - the founder even bought me flowers to welcome me (my own husband hasn't even bought me flowers in over 5 years! - love you baby!) And it also has all the aspects that I wanted out of an office job, so that's a positive.
I will still slave away in my off hours to create more product for FF, I could never give it up entirely, and like my wonderful husband has said "keep your day job until your night job pays off".....I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someday, that will happen.

In the meantime - check out my Etsy store, it's full of cool shit!

Are Times Too Hard for Success??

Times are tough right now. For everyone. I was laid off in October (no, I'm not turning this into a sob story) and still have not been able to find a job. I looked at my lay off as a great opportunity to put some real time and effort into Fabulously Fierce. I guess my pre-occupied mind did not figure in that the country was a mess and it probably wasn't the best time to try to start a business from the ground up. It has been discouraging, and it's hard to separate the fact that the economy sucks from the possibility that my stuff just sucks. I know my stuff doesn't suck, in fact, I think it's pretty damn awesome...just not everyone's cup of tea. But there are days when I just want to throw in the towel.
Luckily, I have an amazing support system of friends and family who want me to succeed and at the end of the day that makes all the difference in the world.
So I will keep plugging away and looking for new avenues for promotion and hope that soon things will start to look up.

What was the point of this post?? I have no idea, but that's what blogs are for, right?

I am having so much fun making these pillows now that I have the piping down to a science! So far the designs have been pretty cutesy, but in the next batch I am going back to my roots and making some goth and punk inspired pillows. I'm excited about those!!

Piping hates me

So, I will have pillows available in my shop very very soon. But this piping is KILLING me! The process seems so simple, yet I am having such a difficult time of it. To make matters worse, I'm a perfectionist, so if it isn't perfect I get a little nuts and start ripping things up.
At least my customers will know that if they buy a pillow it will be up to my standards!
Keep your eyes peeled, they will be for sale SOON!!!
